Switch-Med Initiative (MED TEST I and II Project)

Background

MED TEST applies resource efficiency and cleaner production at plant level across 30 companies in Cairo and Alexandria, under the UNIDO Switch-Med initiative with the Egyptian National Cleaner Production Centre. The methodology deliberately works inside the factory rather than through policy, because resource losses are usually invisible in company accounts until someone measures them at the process step.

Objective

Implement MED TEST I and II activities through cleaner production, training, and on-the-job support.

Outcome

Across 30 companies the programme transferred environmentally sound technology and the capability to keep applying it, which is the distinction between a consultancy intervention and capacity building. Measures identified through TEST typically pay back through reduced material, water and energy cost, making the environmental case a commercial one.
