Background
Environmental claims on packaging are easy to make and hard to verify, which is precisely why a national green label needs defensible criteria before it has any market value. Developed under the National Solid Waste Management Programme with GIZ, this work covered cartons, aluminium, glass, paper and steel — materials with very different recycling realities in Egypt.
Objective
Support climate-friendly waste management and circular economy practices in Egypt under NSWMPIII/EU Green.
Outcome
The guidelines give Egypt a technical basis for credible packaging environmental claims, tied to verification rather than self-declaration. Material-specific criteria matter here: a recyclability claim that is true for aluminium may be meaningless for a composite carton given available local infrastructure.
