Background
The National Bank of Egypt needed environmental and social risk to become a routine, repeatable part of credit decisions rather than an occasional external review. For a lender, the practical challenge is rarely the technical assessment itself — it is building a categorisation and verification workflow that relationship managers can apply consistently across a large and varied portfolio without specialist training on every file.
Objective
Support NBE implementation of environmental and social categorization, assessment, and verification for financed facilities.
Outcome
The engagement moved environmental and social screening from an ad-hoc exercise toward a defined workflow embedded in the bank's lending process. This matters commercially as well as technically: a bank that can demonstrate a functioning environmental and social management system is better positioned with international funders and development finance institutions.
