Project Summary
This project supports the Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA) in strengthening hazardous waste management within Egypt’s mineral fertilizers industry. Building on the recommendations of the 2023 GIZ–NSWMP needs assessment for hazardous waste streams from chemical industries, the project develops technical guidelines to promote environmentally sound and sustainable waste management practices.
Objective
To enhance the management of hazardous waste from the mineral fertilizers industry through the development of technical guidelines that support WMRA’s regulatory role and contribute to the effective implementation of Egypt’s National Waste Management Program.
Scope of Work
- Assess mineral fertilizer production processes in Egypt and identify associated waste streams and environmental impacts.
- Review international best practices, standards, and guidelines for waste management in the mineral fertilizers industry.
- Develop technical guidelines for the handling, storage, collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of fertilizer industry waste.
- Conduct stakeholder consultations and workshops to validate and refine the proposed guidelines.
- Finalize and publish the Technical Guidelines for Waste Management in the Mineral Fertilizers Industry in both English and Arabic.
- Deliver capacity-building and awareness sessions to support effective implementation and compliance with the guidelines.
