E-Waste / Hazardous Fractions
Mapping of Informal Sector WEEE Recycling in Greater Cairo
Mapping of the informal WEEE recycling sector in Greater Cairo to identify its size and geographic distribution.

Background
Most electronic waste in Greater Cairo is handled by an informal sector that operates outside permits, records and environmental controls. Any policy aimed at this stream — extended producer responsibility, formalisation, or hazard reduction — depends first on knowing where the activity is, how large it is, and how the material actually moves, because none of that appears in official statistics.
Objective
Understand informal e-waste collection and recycling activity across Greater Cairo areas.
Outcome
The study produced an evidence base for e-waste policy that previously did not exist in usable form, showing where intervention would reach the most material and where health and environmental risk is concentrated. Work of this kind is a precondition for any credible extended producer responsibility scheme in Egypt.
Standards and frameworks applied
- Basel Convention on hazardous waste movements
- Sustainable Recycling Industries programme methodology
- Egyptian Waste Management Law 202/2020
